I have taken photographs around Los Abrigos harbour on several occasions since I arrived and have commented on the construction of the new fish market as it progressed. A hive of activity took place yesterday as holes were dug in several places around the roundabout (rotunda) until the final site was decided for the trendy new sign whilst weeds were extracted from flower beds, hedges trimmed and a marquee erected down on the solarium.
A prophet had come down from the mountain (the Harbour Master) last Sunday week and said that the new fish market was to open on the 6th at 11:00 hrs. Lo and behold he was right!.....

This has been a collaboration between various island authorities as well as the village itself. Los Abrigos has a long fishing and boat building tradition dating back well before the rest of the south began development. Indeed the new fishing boat, Perlas del Mar, has been shown under construction too. It is hoped that the new facilities, which also include office space, storage and training facilities, as well as the fish market on the upper floor (this is at ground level on one side in case you wonder) will bring much needed employment and prosperity back to the village. The market will be open daily from 08:00 until 13:00 hours, the boats generally return around 06:00-07:00 hours so you will not get much fresher than this! To improve safety the harbour itself has now been divided into an area for boats and a separate area for swimming when using the 'solarium'.

After the speeches the ribbon was cut and everyone had a look around the facilities before retiring to the marque where the top chefs from the local fish restaurants demonstrated what you can do with fish, from raw with fruit to cooked – no not with chips! Everyone could sample their dishes and they all proved extremely tasty especially when washed down with some locally produced white wine from the Abona district. It turned a formal occasion into a most enjoyable morning for everyone who attended.
