Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 150[Santa Cruz], 015[La Laguna], 050[Punta Hidalgo] to Tejina (Fares €1.20, 3.30, 0.10 and €1.15 total €5.75). Return: 050[La Laguna], 015[Santa Cruz], 111[Las Americas] to Las Chafiras, 470[Granadilla] to Los Abrigos (Fares €1.15, 0.10 and €4.80, 0.10 total €6.15). Friday evening saw the Spain Freestyle Motocross championship at Tegueste Football Ground, I had travelled this bus route earlier in the year to see their Romania, followed on Sunday by a trip to Tejina for the 'Hearts of Tejina' fiesta which is the subject of my photo album. The first couple of photos are of an oil tanker delivering to the airport off La Tajita beach which I had described on my 'El Medano' blog. The journey proved to be an easy one with each bus almost due to depart as I arrived at each destination. As the town was closed to traffic the bus dropped us at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill necessitating a walk up to the town square. Th

Fire and Fiestas – the road to Garachico

Bus Routes: 483 [Las Americas], 460 [Icod], 383[Buenavista] to Garachico. Return: 383[Icod], 460[Las Americas], 483[El Medano] to Los Abrigos. Garachico is an interesting town of well preserved narrow streets and old buildings so I thought that it would be interesting to visit the Romería San Roque there on the 16th having seen the preparations a couple of weeks ago with my sister. I set of, as usual, on the 08:41 483 from Los Abrigos to Las Americas bus station using my bono ticket €1.90. After a 10 minute wait for the 460 to depart for Icod and a combined journey fare of €3.30 we departed on a very bright, clear day so, as the bus got held up on the bridge over the motorway, I took a photo in each direction along the TF-1. We journeyed onwards and, as the sun glinted off a large white cross up on the mountain ridge it reminded me of how many shrines and markers there are on the island. As we approached Santiago del Teide I took another photograph of the now verdant cou

The Virgin of Candelaria Celebrations

The Basilica viewed from the  road entering Candelaria Bus Routes: 470 [Granadilla] to San Isidro (€1.20), 111 [Santa Cruz] to Candelaria (€1.85). Fare €3.05 Return: 111 [Las Americas] to San Isidro (€2.90), 470 [Los Cristianos] to Los Abrigos (€0.15). Fare €3.05 My horoscope in one of the free papers said that 'Murphy's Law' would apply to me this week and this must have been it. We have visited Candelaria before so the photos of the bus stops and the town are shown along with the different events, the last being the 'Candle light Procession' held on Feb 2nd (the festival of Candlemas and the Purification of the Virgin is celebrated around the world). In the Canary Islands there are also celebrations in mid-August as The Virgin of Candelaria is the patron Saint of the Canary Islands. In my last blog I mentioned that the pilgrimage, which involves thousands of people arriving from all of the islands and elsewhere, making their way on foot to Candelaria was

Fiesta de la Ceveza, Los Abrigos

Image
Bus Routes: 470 and 483 to Los Abrigos from Las Americas, Los Cristianos, Granadilla and El Medano respectively. We have been experiencing some extremely hot weather in the Canaries recently resulting in forest fires on many of the islands. The volunteer fire brigades have been doing an amazing job with very little equipment or rest. The pilgrimage to Candelaria where people walk from all over the island and fly in from other islands too was cancelled for public safety reasons as the temperatures have soared to over 37*C/100*F and the winds from the Sahara have been hot and dry . This is one of the big events of the year as the Guanches derived their faith from the appearance of the 'Virgin' from the sea at Candelaria, I am hoping that the Romeria will take place on the 15th. Nevertheless Los Abrigos held the 'Fiesta de la Cerveza' on Saturday.

La Caleta, Adeje - Annual Fiesta

Image
Bus Route: 843 [Los Cristianos, Las Americas], 416 [La Caleta, Adeje]. Fare €2.00 total. Return: 416 [Las Americas, Granadilla], 843 [El Medano] to Los Abrigos. Fare €2.00 total. The main outing this week was a trip to La Caleta, Costa Adeje to see the festival of the 'Virgin Our Lady of Mount Carmel'. We have visited La Caleta before on 22nd January for the fiesta at San Sebastian if you want to have a look at the area. On this occasion I went over for the maritime parade and other events taking place on the Sunday. Most towns and villages have an annual fiesta and the village of La Caleta holds theirs between 27th July and 8th August.
