New Year's Eve 2013 in Santa Cruz

Bus Routes: 470 [Granadilla] to El Medano. 116 [Santa Cruz] to Estacion.
Return: 111 [Los Cristianos, Las Americas] to San Isidro. 470 [Los Cristianos] to Las Abrigo.

A spectacular natural light show in the sky started the New Year's Eve 2013 celebrations as I left my apartment for Santa Cruz.

I caught the 470 intending to catch the 111 at San Isidro but managed to dash across the road in El Medano to hop onto the 116 direct to Santa Cruz so no waiting.  I had been invited for dinner with my landlord and his family who have now become good friends and was due to arrive around 20:00 hrs.  The quick connection gave me time to wander around the immediate area of their apartment and take some photographs of the street decorations and the Nativity scene in the Plaza de Candelaria.

Jose Lois, his wife Teresa and daughter Yaiza proved to be excellent hosts and when I arrived the table was set with delicious delicacies and the traditional dinner of roast lamb brought all the way from Seville in Spain. I hope that the photographs make your mouth water as did mine!  After dinner, served at 22:00 hrs we went up onto the roof terrace to see the massive firework display taking place in the harbour.

Surrounding areas of Santa Cruz also had local displays creating a panorama of fireworks lasting for about an hour. Cruise ships in the harbour welcomed in the New Year with a trumpet voluntary from their fog horns and the lights twinkled from as far away as the island of Gran Canaria.

We then proceeded out onto the street to meet with friends in the Plaza Espania via the Plaza de Candelaria where the concert was in full swing, dancers, entertainers and groups made sure that the crowd was not bored until until about 05:00 hrs.  We sat in the open outside a bar in the Plaza Espania as friends came and went and it is exceedingly pleasant to be able to enjoy the festivities whilst not freezing as I would have in the UK!
All the best for the New Year 2013 to everyone!
