Mt Teide for Christmas

Image
Bus Route – 342. The bus runs from La Caleta (09:00) through Costa Adeje bus station (09:15) and Los Christianos (09:30) to the Parador hotel (return 16:00), the Teleférico (return 15:40) and El Portillo (return 15:15). The Bono ticket is not valid on this route. Having failed to visit Mt Teide during my stay I decided to book two nights at the Parador Hotel, about as near to the top as you can get other than the refuge up near the top of the Teleférico (cable car), in the hope that I may also see some snow and, therefore, take some contrasting photographs.

Intermission

My original intention was to spend a year in Tenerife then return home and travel on to a new country next year. As I was booking my flight home I contemplated the English weather, a cold Christmas and all of the places I had not yet seen in Tenerife and the wider Canaries. A quick search revealed that I could fly back to the UK for a month via Easyjet at a very reasonable price. This would give me a week each with brothers and sisters in the UK and a chance to visit friends in Leicester where I had been living before my trip.

Los Abrigos October Fiesta

Image
Bus Routes: 470 [Grandilla] or [Los Cristianos] and 483 [El Medano] or Las Americas] to Los Abrigo. Just goes to show, it's not over till the fat lady sings.... Costa Adeje has just organised a week long 'Octoberfest' after I attended the traditional one in Puerto de la Cruz however, not to be outdone, Los Abrigos organised its own 'October Fiesta' from 12 noon until midnight on the 12th and 13th October. The 12th was another Spanish national holiday something to do with discovering America I think?  We took delivery of a new sculpture which was erected on the Calle Marina on the way down to the harbour and the new fish market building is nearly completed so I have started off the album there before moving on to the stalls selling beer (again 1€) and Tapas, this time there was much more competition between the various restaurants and bars and a much wider choice of delicacies to choose from including cakes! There were also stalls covering work of local artisa

What's happening ...

Image
Patrick's cat, lord of the manor! I saw the seagull trying to fly... It all went a bit quiet as far as the blog is concerned over the past few weeks, it took me a while to catch up with the photographs from the Los Abrigos Fiesta as I was working on a little project creating a 'Los Abrigos Fiestas' souvenir booklet using photographs to trace the development and progress of the fiesta from start to finish. It worked out quite well but cost a fortune to reproduce so I ended up giving copies to the women who organised the event and there it hangs at the moment. I also converted the files into .pdf format parts 1,2 & 3 as I could not create the whole thing as 1 document. Anyone know of a 'free' program to join .pdf files together?  I have now uploaded the photographs to go with the 'Return of the Fleet' blog and inserted the link on the post.

Fiestas San Blas... part 2...

.... continued from part 1 .... Saturday 9th September: 20,30 h. – Misa en la Iglesia. A continuación PROCESIÓN y EMBARCACIÓN de nuestros SANTOS y al finalizar exhibición FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES. Mass in the church followed by the procession from the church down to the harbour where the icons are brought aboard the fishing boats and a circuit of the harbour takes place.  The icons are then brought ashore to witness a giant firework display launched from the harbour wall and across the sea itself to the other shore. 24,00 h. – VERBENA amenizada por las ORQUESTAS SENSACIÓN GOMERA y DELICIOSA.

Fiestas San Blas and the Virgin del Carmen

Image
Bus Routes: 470 [Grandilla] or [Los Cristianos] and 483 [El Medano] or Las Americas] to Los Abrigo. The village plaza is prepared for the fiesta The annual fiestas San Blas and the Virgin del Carmen commenced on Wednesday 5th September and lasted through until the early hours of Tuesday 11th. I have toured the island attending fiestas and romarias but this gave me a unique opportunity to follow the preparations and the full calendar of activities which takes place during this week long affairs. Surprisingly I found out that the 'Fiesta committee' comprises of only three ladies, so quite a large task for them!

Return of the fleet

Image
Bus Routes: 470 [Grandilla] or [Los Cristianos] and 483 [El Medano] or Las Americas] to Los Abrigo. I woke up this morning to see a convoy of fishing boats lined up to enter the harbour at Los Abrigos. It would appear that some of the Los Abrigos fleet routinely dock at other locations such as Santa Cruz where there are regular fish markets and only return for special occasions such as the coming fiesta which starts tomorrow. I took some photos then wandered down to the harbour for a closer look. The boats were being cleaned, new fish crates and other equipment loaded ready for another trip to sea. I hope that, once the new fish market being built at the harbour will allow me to record some of the types of catch in the not too distant future. It would also appear that the harbour will be much busier than it is at present with only the smaller local boats regularly docked there. View my 'Return of the Fleet' Photo Album

It's not October and it's not Munich!

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Santa Cruz], 103[Puerto Cruz]. (Fares: €1.20*3.30*2.25 total €6.75). Journey time 2 hours door to door. Return: 102 [Santa Cruz], 111[Las Americas] to Las Chafiras. Taxi to Los Abrigos. (Fares: €3.30*3.75 total €7.05, taxi €4.70 after midnight.). Bus journey time about 2 hrs 20 mins). [* denotes Bono combined fare reductions] There is always something different going on in Tenerife, Beer on Saturday, Model boats on Sunday, boats, beer, beer, boats which trip should I make. Santa Cruz is hosting the first, of what it hopes will be a monthly event, model boat day on the lake at Plaza Espania whilst at Puerto de la Cruz it isn't October and it isn't Munich but they are hosting a 'beer fest' as the culmination of a week long series of concerts by 'Die Lustigen Egerländer' Bavarian Orchestra (oom pah band). As you can probably tell from the title the 'beer fest' won so this blog is dedicated to my sis

Fiesta of the Hearts of Tejina

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 150[Santa Cruz], 015[La Laguna], 050[Punta Hidalgo] to Tejina (Fares €1.20, 3.30, 0.10 and €1.15 total €5.75). Return: 050[La Laguna], 015[Santa Cruz], 111[Las Americas] to Las Chafiras, 470[Granadilla] to Los Abrigos (Fares €1.15, 0.10 and €4.80, 0.10 total €6.15). Friday evening saw the Spain Freestyle Motocross championship at Tegueste Football Ground, I had travelled this bus route earlier in the year to see their Romania, followed on Sunday by a trip to Tejina for the 'Hearts of Tejina' fiesta which is the subject of my photo album. The first couple of photos are of an oil tanker delivering to the airport off La Tajita beach which I had described on my 'El Medano' blog. The journey proved to be an easy one with each bus almost due to depart as I arrived at each destination. As the town was closed to traffic the bus dropped us at the roundabout at the bottom of the hill necessitating a walk up to the town square. Th

Fire and Fiestas – the road to Garachico

Image
Bus Routes: 483 [Las Americas], 460 [Icod], 383[Buenavista] to Garachico. Return: 383[Icod], 460[Las Americas], 483[El Medano] to Los Abrigos. Garachico is an interesting town of well preserved narrow streets and old buildings so I thought that it would be interesting to visit the Romería San Roque there on the 16th having seen the preparations a couple of weeks ago with my sister. I set of, as usual, on the 08:41 483 from Los Abrigos to Las Americas bus station using my bono ticket €1.90. After a 10 minute wait for the 460 to depart for Icod and a combined journey fare of €3.30 we departed on a very bright, clear day so, as the bus got held up on the bridge over the motorway, I took a photo in each direction along the TF-1. We journeyed onwards and, as the sun glinted off a large white cross up on the mountain ridge it reminded me of how many shrines and markers there are on the island. As we approached Santiago del Teide I took another photograph of the now verdant cou

The Virgin of Candelaria Celebrations

Image
The Basilica viewed from the  road entering Candelaria Bus Routes: 470 [Granadilla] to San Isidro (€1.20), 111 [Santa Cruz] to Candelaria (€1.85). Fare €3.05 Return: 111 [Las Americas] to San Isidro (€2.90), 470 [Los Cristianos] to Los Abrigos (€0.15). Fare €3.05 My horoscope in one of the free papers said that 'Murphy's Law' would apply to me this week and this must have been it. We have visited Candelaria before so the photos of the bus stops and the town are shown along with the different events, the last being the 'Candle light Procession' held on Feb 2nd (the festival of Candlemas and the Purification of the Virgin is celebrated around the world). In the Canary Islands there are also celebrations in mid-August as The Virgin of Candelaria is the patron Saint of the Canary Islands. In my last blog I mentioned that the pilgrimage, which involves thousands of people arriving from all of the islands and elsewhere, making their way on foot to Candelaria was

Fiesta de la Ceveza, Los Abrigos

Image
Bus Routes: 470 and 483 to Los Abrigos from Las Americas, Los Cristianos, Granadilla and El Medano respectively. We have been experiencing some extremely hot weather in the Canaries recently resulting in forest fires on many of the islands. The volunteer fire brigades have been doing an amazing job with very little equipment or rest. The pilgrimage to Candelaria where people walk from all over the island and fly in from other islands too was cancelled for public safety reasons as the temperatures have soared to over 37*C/100*F and the winds from the Sahara have been hot and dry . This is one of the big events of the year as the Guanches derived their faith from the appearance of the 'Virgin' from the sea at Candelaria, I am hoping that the Romeria will take place on the 15th. Nevertheless Los Abrigos held the 'Fiesta de la Cerveza' on Saturday.

La Caleta, Adeje - Annual Fiesta

Image
Bus Route: 843 [Los Cristianos, Las Americas], 416 [La Caleta, Adeje]. Fare €2.00 total. Return: 416 [Las Americas, Granadilla], 843 [El Medano] to Los Abrigos. Fare €2.00 total. The main outing this week was a trip to La Caleta, Costa Adeje to see the festival of the 'Virgin Our Lady of Mount Carmel'. We have visited La Caleta before on 22nd January for the fiesta at San Sebastian if you want to have a look at the area. On this occasion I went over for the maritime parade and other events taking place on the Sunday. Most towns and villages have an annual fiesta and the village of La Caleta holds theirs between 27th July and 8th August.

Mariachi and the week that was...

Image
My sister was out visiting for a week and, just to prove that Titsa buses can be used by all we went to Santa Cruz, Los Cristianos and El Medano. The final trip was up to Garachico through Iod de Vinos so that she could see the mountains and the forests too. After looking around the fort and the old town and lunch of course we hopped on the bus to Buenavista del Norte before returning to Icod and still had time to look around the church and its museum (which I missed last time) before catching the bus back home. Quite a day! No photos - she's shy. Back in Los Abrigos the Mariachi 'Chasna' entertained us all tonight (Saturday) courtesy of the council. I have added the photos to the Los Abrigos album and attached them here.

Santa Cruz v Admiral Nelson, 1797

Image
Bus routes: 470 [Los Cristianos] to Las Chafiras, 111 [Santa Cruz]. Return: 111 [Las Americas] to Las Chafiras then taxi to Los Abrigos. The year is 1797, the date is 25th July, it is the Feast of Santiago. The wooden houses of the town of Santa Cruz protected by a few small forts along the seafront are besieged by Admiral Nelson's fleet. A small contingent of local militias, civilians and 300 soldiers managed to ward off and defeat over 3000 trained seamen and marines of Admiral Nelson fleet as he attempted to take the city. It is the battle where he lost his arm and his (I believe) his only defeat. General Gutierrez treated wounded sailors and marines in the town hospital and, in honour of the fair and

Forest Fires fought from the air

Image
You may have seen on the news that large swathes of forest in southern Tenerife have been destroyed by fire which has been fought on the ground and in the air over the last week and, over the last couple of days, from the air. The skill and courage of these crews is to be admired as they fly continuously through the smoke just above the flames to help extinguish these fires. There were two planes performing circuits then landing at airport south to reload and refuel avoiding the scheduled flights as they went about their business. Several villages including Vilaflor, the highest village in Spain - see blog, have been evacuated and I hope that they can return to their home with minimum of damage soon. I took these photos from the end of the village near my apartment as the sun was setting. There are large tracts of smoke rather than cloud across the skyline and the aircraft lights can be seen as they circuit the fires. Probably best viewed as a slideshow. View my 'Fore

Virgin del Carmen weekend at Los Abrigos

Image
Bus Routes: To Los Abrigos and fishing villages all over the island. There have been festivities taking place in fishing communities all over the island this weekend celebrating the 'Virgin del Carmen', patron saint of mariners. In Las Galletas down the coast it was celebrated in conjunction with their annual fiesta whilst here in Los Abrigos the weekend started on Friday evening with a 'Spectacular' including a magic show in the plaza. Over two hours of entertainment for the young and not so young! This was followed by 'Fiesta de la espuma', a foam party and games for the children on Saturday afternoon (no photos, I spent the afternoon in Las Galletas but it turned out that things didn't happen till the evening).

Military Museum and North Pier Santa Cruz

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to El Medano, 116[Santa Cruz], 920 [Circum] to Military Museum stop ID 9355. Return: Any back to the bus station, 116[El Medano, Granadilla] to El Medano, 470[Los Cristianos] to Los Abrigos. Another interesting day out but again one which did not go quite according to plan. I caught the 470 in the direction of Granadilla with the intention of catching the 111 to Santa Cruz from San Isidro however; as we pulled up at the stop opposite the church in El Medano I could see the 116[Santa Cruz] coming up to the stop on the other side of the road. I hopped off and caught that one, another advantage of the 'Bono' ticket no extra charge. I arrived in Santa Cruz at about 11:40 and went down to the lower deck to catch the 920 round to the museum. As there wasn't a bus in the stand and I was feeling hungry I decided to visit the station cafe for brunch. A very tasty half a 'Tortilla Rellen' a potato omlete filled with cheese and ham, bread r

Beer and Tapas at Los Abrigos - don't drink and drive!

Image
Bus Routes: 470 from Granadilla or Los Cristianos, 480 from Las Americas or El Medano. No need for me to travel to this event, a gentle pounding heard during the morning proved to be the testing for the sound system being set up in the Los Abrigos plaza.

Buenavista del Norte

Image
Bus Routes: 483[Los Cristianos, Las Americas Est], 460 [Guía Isora, Icod] to Icod, 363 [Buenavista]. Return: 383 [Icod, Puerto Cruz] to Icod, 460[Guía Isora, Las Americas Est] to Las Americas, 483[El Medano] to Los Abrigos. We are still having some rough seas around here so I hopped out for the 08:41 483 to Estación Las Americas having decided to complete another bus journey to see what is there, this time completing the route to the extreme north-west of the island, namely Buenavista del Norte. Because of the way the island lies we are at the south, Santa Cruz is way up the east coast then we have the north-east (which to me always seemed north) which we visited a while ago, the north is approximately where Puerto de La Cruz is which we have also visited then we have Buenavista del Norte at the extreme north-west. We have been on the bus journey as far as Garachico last November so this takes us up to the end of the line. Whilst passing through Santiago del Teide the 355 was wai

Día de San Juan – Fire, water and pagan festivities.

Image
Bus Route: Practically anywhere on the island depending on which location you choose. Los Abrigos beach The celebration of 'Midsummer Day' which is actually the 21 st June takes place on the weekend of the 23 rd /24th June each year and is known throughout Spain and the Canaries as 'Día de San Juan' (the day of Saint John the Baptist). As we wind in the UK many religious festivals are tied in with old pagan customs as the Romans converted to Christianity. This festival brings together three local beliefs – the importance of medicinal plants in relation to health, youth and beauty; the protective nature of fire to ward off evil spirits and witches and water and its purifying effects. For the Guanches the day marked the start of the New Year.

Agimiroy & Paula live at the Note di Caffe, Los Abrigos

Image
Once more Alex and Monica, proprietors of the 'Note di Caffe' here in Los Abrigos, brought a different musical combo to entertain at the 'Note de Caffe' on Sunday evening. A mixture of traditional Brazilian music and song had the audience performing not only on the dance floor but also 'on stage' selecting a variety of instruments from the 'box of tricks' brought by the duo 'Agimiroy & Paula.

Santa Cruz Blues Festival

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Santa Cruz] Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas] to Las Chafiras then taxi to Los Abrigos I just managed to catch the 19:40 470 which turned up at 19:30 then waited on the slip road at San Isidro for the next 111, despite roadworks on the Autopista I still managed to get to the festival for 21:10 to find that 'Spikedrivers' were in full steam. For once an event had started on time. All I can say about this group is that they were so good I bought two CDs! A good start to an excellent event. There is something unique about standing under a star lit sky on a warm evening listening to good performers with a cool beer in your hand and a lively, appreciative crowd of people around you.

La Orotava – Corpus Christi Flower Festival

Image
Bus Routes: 450[San Isidro], 111[Santa Cruz], 101[Orotava, P de la Cruz] to La Orotava. Return: 108[Santa Cruz D], 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas] to San Isidro up to 19:30 departure otherwise Las Chafiras, 470[Los Cristianos] otherwise taxi. The festival for Corpus Christi was celebrated on the 3 rd of June in most places on the island, I later discovered that there was a small flower/sand painting in front of the church in El Medano, but the big one is held at La Orotava on the 14 th this year. They also have a romaria on Sunday 17th! I must remind you that these dates vary depending upon where Easter falls in any given year – you can check on the local websites or use the link to 'Island Connections' which publishes a fortnightly calendar. I was taking some friends with me so asked them to meet me just after 08:00 hours at the bus stop in Los Abrigos. I figured we had to get there early as the services for the romerias finish around 13:00 hours and I thought th

Pit Stop at Note di Caffe, Los Abrigos

Image
The 'Note di Caffe' in Los Abrigos rang to a different tune on Sunday evening with a wide selection of titles sung in Spanish and English from various musical genre entertaining a lively crowd. It did not take long before the audience was tapping their feet and leaping up to dance floor reflecting the style being played at the time.  'Pal Santo'  delivered an outstanding performance and, due to the many encores, played solidly for over three hours pausing every now and again for a sip of the local brew. All in all Sunday was a great day!

Romeria San Antonio de Padua, Granadilla de Abona

Image
Bus Route: 470[Granadilla], Return: 470[Los Cristianos] Where to start, I've updated the 'Los Abrigos' photo album with some photos of changes in the village and lifeguard (I think) training down on the beach. I have also added some photos to the Granadilla de Abona photo album ,  of of the trip there on Saturday 9 th for the 'classic car rally' and other displays relating to the fiesta. The main event, the Romeria for San Antonio de Padua who is the patron saint of the municipality is in a new photo album. Just as Tenerife has the carnival season in February/March where events reflect the local character we also seem to have the 'romeria' season between March and October. There is also the celebration of Corpus Cristi, this year the 3 rd June, but tied to Easter, which makes June a busy month. I have just discovered that, although the Romeria is on the Sunday10 th this year the public holiday in the municipality is on Wednesday 13 th s

Santa Cruz - Museum of Nature and Man

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 115[Santa Cruz]. Return: 116[Medano, Granadilla] to San Isidro, 470[Los Cristianos] to Los Abrigos. (Looking at the bus routes, if I had thought about it I could have got off the 116 at El Medano and waited for the 470 by the beach. The 115 to Santa Cruz happened to arrive before the 111 so I hopped on that going north.) I decided to head north once more to have a look around the 'Museo de la Naturalez y el Hombre' or the 'Museum of Nature and Man' in English having now walked past it several times. As I have mentioned previously the building was originally the Civic Hospital and there are a couple of pictures showing the wards on a display in the entrance lobby. This must have been a light and airy place to be treated judging from the layout of the museum and is built around central courtyards currently containing a selection of trees of the islands, sculpture and seating. The entrance fee was €3 an

A Walk in the Parque Garcia Sanabria

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to El Medano, 116[Medano, Santa Cruz] to Estación De Guaguas (Bus station), 920[Intercambiador] to the Parque. Return: (Any 900 series to Estación), 116[Medano, Granadilla], 483[Los Cristianos, P Americas]. Funny how things develop, I had intended my next blog to be about a Canarian sports day at El Medano on Sunday 27 th May but that turned out to be a local feast with a group on stage. Finally managed to get a photo of the football team playing on the sports field built in the barranco to add to the 'El Medano' photo album and some updates to Los Abrigos too. Anyway, after my trip to 'Nob Hill' on the 21 st my sister emailed to say that it was nice to see some flowers on the tree as a lot of the landscape in the south is quite barren. It found out that it is the Canarian Independence Day Public holiday today so I thought, “Why not a trip to the parque I mentioned as most things are closed?”. I went out to catch the 09:40 470

Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur or Tenerife Reina Sofia

Bus Route: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to airport. Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to Las Chafiras, 470 or 483 to Los Abrigos  This blog should, I suppose, have been the first one of the series as I arrived at the airport via 'Easyjet' from Gatwick on 1st November 2011. I actually took a taxi which cost me €25.00 when I could have gone by bus which would have cost me €4-5.00. It is especially easy to travel by bus if you are staying in Los Cristianos or Las Americas as the 111 goes to both destinations, travelling in the opposite direction you will arrive in Santa Cruz. The 343 will also take you to Los Cristianos or Puerto De La Cruz in the opposite direction. The 450 runs between Las Americas and San Isidro. If you are staying in Los Abrigos, Golf de Sur, Silencio or Los Galletas hop off the 111 or 450 at San Isidro and catch the 470 provided you can get there before the last bus at about 20:40 hours. Wherever you a

Santa Cruz – Nob Hill Tour

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Santa Cruz]  Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas] to Las Chafiras, 483[El Medano] to Los Abrigos As Jose Lois and Teresa are departing on holiday this week I decided to have a trip up to Santa Cruz to deliver a collection of photos as there were many of the party not included in the 'album' and to have a look around the Museum 'Naturaleza y el Hombre' (Natural history and Human Culture). Once again I took the now well trodden path turning left out of the bus station. I noticed that the sign for the 'Plaza de la Presidencia' was now 'Plaza General Gutiérrez Mellado' which made me look more closely at the route I was taking as described in my previous blogs. I crossed over the Avada De Bravo Murillo (I couldn't see a name plaque anywhere) which now contains tram and road in two separate tracks at the main junction shown in the photographs.

No bus a boat this time

Image
When creating a blog the advice is to stick to the subject but occasionally things fall outside of the 'bus' trip but, I think, are worth including as part of my adventure in Tenerife. On Saturday Hose Lois and Teresa invited me on a boat trip with a friend of his who owns the boat. This is moored in the marina along Playa Americas and they travelled down from Santa Cruz for a day out picking me up on the way. On arrival we took the provisions down to the quay whilst 'skipper' carried out his checks. A coffee was called for after the struggle to find parking spots as there appear to be more cars than boats. On the way back to the boat I took a couple of shots of a strange boat which allows you the diving experience without the training. Figure it out from the photos!  Once the skipper was ready we loaded the provisions and boarded. Edging the boat out, it is a ten birth twin motor affair, was no mean feat as the marina was quite busy on the day.

Romaria at Santa Cruz

Image
Bus Routes: 482[Los Cristianos, Playa America] to Golf del Sur, 115[Santa Cruz] Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P America Est] to Las Chafiras, 843[El  Medano] to Los Abrigos. Well who is that in the photograph? Last week Jose Lois and Teresa invited me to Santa Cruz for the Romeria on Sunday 13th May. The fiesta had run for several days, the stage in the Plaza Candelaria was back this time decked out with bread and sheaves of wheat. The costumed event also takes place on an evening/night but this year Santa Cruz was having the event on a Sunday during the day too. I have added some more photographs to the 'Santa Cruz' photo album of my journey and of the event itself. There is also a photograph of the bus stop in Golf del Sur which I use to catch the 09:35 115 to Santa Cruz. This one is handy because the hotel caffe opens at 09:00 affording a cup of coffee before the journey. All thanks to my friend Kev staying there. So I have worked out that all of my routes will work whe

Masca - a hidden gem

Image
Bus Routes: 483[Playa Americas Est], 416[Icod] to Santiago del Teide, 355[Buenevista] to Masca Return: 355[Santiago del Teide], 416[Playa Americas Est], 843[El Medano] to Los Abrigos Masca is a hidden jem reached by a narrow winding road, originally a goat track up and over the mountain from Santiago del Teide down to the village. The sea is some 3 hours walk away on a well trodden path running down either side of the gorge. Once you reach the sea you have a choice of a pre-arranged boat trip back to either Los Gigentes or Los Cristianos or you can turn around and take about 5 hours to walk back to the village as you are now travelling up hill. You need to be pretty fit as the path is rough and the temperature quite high but, I am told, well worth the effort as the scenery, flora and fauna are spectacular.

Festival of the Cross

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to El Medano and Granadilla, 416[Playa Americas] to San Miguel Return: 416[Granadilla], 470[Los Cristianos] to San Isidro and Los Abrigos Feast of the Cross, El Medano, 2012 On the 3rd May each year many towns and villages in Tenerife decorate the cross outside the church, if they have one, with flowers otherwise crosses are made up and decorated and placed in front of the building. I noticed this when I went into El Medano the following day which prompted me to do a little travelling to see if I could find some more. I looked on the calendar to see if this related to a religious event then resorted to an internet search which gave me plenty on cross dressing! Eventually I found this item under 'Feast of the Cross in Wikipedia: In the  Gallican  usage, beginning about the seventh century, the Feast of the Cross was celebrated on May 3, and called "Crouchmas" (for "Cross Mass") or " Roodmas ". When the Gallican and

Tegueste - Romeria de San Marcos

Image
Bus Routes: 483[Los Cristianos, Playa Americas] to Golf del Sur, 115[Santa Cruz] bus station, 015[La Laguna] bus station, 050[Punta Hidalgo] to Tegueste however on the day of the romeria the non-scheduled 052[Tegueste] runs a continuous service to Teguese. Return: 052[La Laguna] bus station, 015[Santa Crus] bus station, 111[Los Cristianos, Playa Americas] to San Isidro, 470[Los Cristianos] to Los Abrigos/Golf del Sur. Romeria means pilgrimage so this event published in the paper is the pilgrimage of Saint Mark where Canarians would walk to the church in Tegueste to celebrate the Saint. My friend Kev's holiday on Tenerife was drawing to a close so I thought this would show him a bit a local 'colour' then I began to wonder if it was a bit too far to travel if nothing much happened but we decided to go. I caught the 08:41 483 over to Golf de Sur and we retraced our route up to Santa Cruz. A ten minute wait for the 015 to La Laguna began to reassure me that we has made th

Note de Caffe, Los Abrigos

Image
Once again 'Pureze' gave a 'massive' performance at the 'Note de Caffe', Los Abrigos this time with the added talent of a younger brother who happened to be here on holiday - why waste family talent and he was definitely talented whether singing unaccompanied or as part of the 'trio'
