Forest Fires fought from the air





You may have seen on the news that large swathes of forest in southern Tenerife have been destroyed by fire which has been fought on the ground and in the air over the last week and, over the last couple of days, from the air. The skill and courage of these crews is to be admired as they fly continuously through the smoke just above the flames to help extinguish these fires. There were two planes performing circuits then landing at airport south to reload and refuel avoiding the scheduled flights as they went about their business. Several villages including Vilaflor, the highest village in Spain - see blog, have been evacuated and I hope that they can return to their home with minimum of damage soon. I took these photos from the end of the village near my apartment as the sun was setting. There are large tracts of smoke rather than cloud across the skyline and the aircraft lights can be seen as they circuit the fires. Probably best viewed as a slideshow.

How this all started...

I accepted voluntary redundancy at the end of August 2011 and used the small payout to purchase a good laptop, a reasonable digital (DSLR) camera and a Kindle with GPS. I hadn't taken photos for years and as I was about to move around I had decided that the Kindle would replace my collection of books I was always going to read. Los Cristianos - Burial of the Sardine

Bus Routes: 483[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to Los Cristianos. Return: 111[Santa Cruz] to Las Chafiras then taxi home. As you can see from the first photograph in the album I was not alone when I caught the 18:31, which actually arrived at 18:45, to Los Cristianos!  We arrived in ample time for the start of the procession at the 'Cultural Centre' where the 'Sardine' had been lying-in-state.

Los Abrigos - my base

Having arrived and settled in to my apartment it was time to explore the village I had adopted for the next 12 months. First of all I took some photos from the windows as, true to their word, I couldn't get much closer to the sea. The taxi from the airport had dropped me at the top of the village square and I had walked down to meet David from Los Abrigos Properties (he has since sold the business) who had arranged to meet me at noon as I had picked one of the many 'public holidays' to arrive on.
