The main outing this week was a trip to La Caleta, Costa Adeje to see the festival of the 'Virgin Our Lady of Mount Carmel'. We have visited La Caleta before on 22nd January for the fiesta at San Sebastian if you want to have a look at the area. On this occasion I went over for the maritime parade and other events taking place on the Sunday. Most towns and villages have an annual fiesta and the village of La Caleta holds theirs between 27th July and 8th August.
There are numerous events and competitions, the fair ground and firework displays at these fiestas - a sample of the program:
Friday 3rd August - 18:00 Parcheesi Championship. 20:00 Folklore festival.
Saturday 4th August - 11:00 the first smim across La Caleta bay. 18:00 Parcheesi and Domino finals. 21:00 Celebration of the Eucharist, procession with band then firework display. 23:00 Dancing in the plaza to live music.
Sunday 5th August - 12:00 Decent of the Virgin Our Lady of Mount Carmel to the dock. 13:00 Traditional maritime procession with a fleet of boats from the surrounding areas. 14:00 Large paella served to the community accompanied by live music and dancing. 19:00 Party 'Singles and Couples'. 21:00 Awards ceremony with live music and dancing.
Monday 6th August - Traditional Canarian Games at the exhibition ground.
You can see, as I have previously said, that there is always something going on somewhere whenever you visit Tenerife, some are big and flashy and some, like this one, retain the communal village feel. The fairground may be smaller but it is enjoyed just as much and the firework displays are always huge!

On a sad note - Titsa have put up their prices due to the recession, the Bono tickets are now €14.00 and €30.00 respectively. They are still good value as the separate journeys would have cost €3.05 each way for this trip. I am still using up my old tickets so will keep you informed if there are any further changes when I buy the new ones.

Rant - The vast increase in all-inclusive hotel bookings is going to kill the local economy and push many more locals out of work! Patrick has closed the doors on 'Las Olas' due to lack of customers and I fear that many more will follow. This also has a knock on effect on the markets ans other peripheral enterprises. Nuff said!

Pilgrims wait at the dock with the 'Virgin Our Lady of Mount Carmel'

... to be ferried to the boat

... no mutiny on this Bounty! ...

... the 'Virgin our Lady of Mount Carmel' is then .....

... (a view of the dock no easy task to load the pilgrims and the 'Virgin') ...

... transported to the boat ...
