Los Abrigos October Fiesta

Just goes to show, it's not over till the fat lady sings....
Costa Adeje has just organised a week long 'Octoberfest' after I attended the traditional one in Puerto de la Cruz however, not to be outdone, Los Abrigos organised its own 'October Fiesta' from 12 noon until midnight on the 12th and 13th October. The 12th was another Spanish national holiday something to do with discovering America I think?  We took delivery of a new sculpture which was erected on the Calle Marina on the way down to the harbour and the new fish market building is nearly completed so I have started off the album there before moving on to the stalls selling beer (again 1€) and Tapas, this time there was much more competition between the various restaurants and bars and a much wider choice of delicacies to choose from including cakes! There were also stalls covering work of local artisans, leather-work and embroidery and shops, children's fancies and clothes at bargain prices. I have tried to credit the photos with the details of the various businesses concerned so that you can try them for yourselves. Throughout both days music both live and recorded entertained the crowds enjoying the activities in the sunshine whilst it actually rained up the road in Las Chafiras!

How this all started...

I accepted voluntary redundancy at the end of August 2011 and used the small payout to purchase a good laptop, a reasonable digital (DSLR) camera and a Kindle with GPS. I hadn't taken photos for years and as I was about to move around I had decided that the Kindle would replace my collection of books I was always going to read. The next question was "What to do next?" A friend of mine had been telling me to visit Tenerife for years so I thought why not! Easyjet provided a cheap ticket and a browse around the websites provided a nice little apartment in Los Abrigos. On arrival, after signing the paperwork I was asked if I was interested in hiring a car? Being on a limited budget and seeing how busy the island's roads were I had already decided that I was going to travel by bus. Los Abrigos - my base

Having arrived and settled in to my apartment it was time to explore the village I had adopted for the next 12 months. First of all I took some photos from the windows as, true to their word, I couldn't get much closer to the sea. The taxi from the airport had dropped me at the top of the village square and I had walked down to meet David from Los Abrigos Properties (he has since sold the business) who had arranged to meet me at noon as I had picked one of the many 'public holidays' to arrive on. We then walked along the street 'Playa Grande' to my apartment block. Los Cristianos - Burial of the Sardine

Bus Routes: 483[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to Los Cristianos. Return: 111[Santa Cruz] to Las Chafiras then taxi home. As you can see from the first photograph in the album I was not alone when I caught the 18:31, which actually arrived at 18:45, to Los Cristianos!  We arrived in ample time for the start of the procession at the 'Cultural Centre' where the 'Sardine' had been lying-in-state.
