A Walk in the Parque Garcia Sanabria

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to El Medano, 116[Medano, Santa Cruz] to Estación De Guaguas (Bus station), 920[Intercambiador] to the Parque. Return: (Any 900 series to Estación), 116[Medano, Granadilla], 483[Los Cristianos, P Americas]. Funny how things develop, I had intended my next blog to be about a Canarian sports day at El Medano on Sunday 27 th May but that turned out to be a local feast with a group on stage. Finally managed to get a photo of the football team playing on the sports field built in the barranco to add to the 'El Medano' photo album and some updates to Los Abrigos too. Anyway, after my trip to 'Nob Hill' on the 21 st my sister emailed to say that it was nice to see some flowers on the tree as a lot of the landscape in the south is quite barren. It found out that it is the Canarian Independence Day Public holiday today so I thought, “Why not a trip to the parque I mentioned as most things are closed?”. I went out to catch the 09:40 470...

Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur or Tenerife Reina Sofia

Bus Route: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to airport. Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas Est] to Las Chafiras, 470 or 483 to Los Abrigos  This blog should, I suppose, have been the first one of the series as I arrived at the airport via 'Easyjet' from Gatwick on 1st November 2011. I actually took a taxi which cost me €25.00 when I could have gone by bus which would have cost me €4-5.00. It is especially easy to travel by bus if you are staying in Los Cristianos or Las Americas as the 111 goes to both destinations, travelling in the opposite direction you will arrive in Santa Cruz. The 343 will also take you to Los Cristianos or Puerto De La Cruz in the opposite direction. The 450 runs between Las Americas and San Isidro. If you are staying in Los Abrigos, Golf de Sur, Silencio or Los Galletas hop off the 111 or 450 at San Isidro and catch the 470 provided you can get there before the last bus at about 20:40 hours. Wherever you ...

Santa Cruz – Nob Hill Tour

Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to San Isidro, 111[Santa Cruz]  Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P Americas] to Las Chafiras, 483[El Medano] to Los Abrigos As Jose Lois and Teresa are departing on holiday this week I decided to have a trip up to Santa Cruz to deliver a collection of photos as there were many of the party not included in the 'album' and to have a look around the Museum 'Naturaleza y el Hombre' (Natural history and Human Culture). Once again I took the now well trodden path turning left out of the bus station. I noticed that the sign for the 'Plaza de la Presidencia' was now 'Plaza General Gutiérrez Mellado' which made me look more closely at the route I was taking as described in my previous blogs. I crossed over the Avada De Bravo Murillo (I couldn't see a name plaque anywhere) which now contains tram and road in two separate tracks at the main junction shown in the photographs.

No bus a boat this time

Image
When creating a blog the advice is to stick to the subject but occasionally things fall outside of the 'bus' trip but, I think, are worth including as part of my adventure in Tenerife. On Saturday Hose Lois and Teresa invited me on a boat trip with a friend of his who owns the boat. This is moored in the marina along Playa Americas and they travelled down from Santa Cruz for a day out picking me up on the way. On arrival we took the provisions down to the quay whilst 'skipper' carried out his checks. A coffee was called for after the struggle to find parking spots as there appear to be more cars than boats. On the way back to the boat I took a couple of shots of a strange boat which allows you the diving experience without the training. Figure it out from the photos!  Once the skipper was ready we loaded the provisions and boarded. Edging the boat out, it is a ten birth twin motor affair, was no mean feat as the marina was quite busy on the day.

Romaria at Santa Cruz

Bus Routes: 482[Los Cristianos, Playa America] to Golf del Sur, 115[Santa Cruz] Return: 111[Los Cristianos, P America Est] to Las Chafiras, 843[El  Medano] to Los Abrigos. Well who is that in the photograph? Last week Jose Lois and Teresa invited me to Santa Cruz for the Romeria on Sunday 13th May. The fiesta had run for several days, the stage in the Plaza Candelaria was back this time decked out with bread and sheaves of wheat. The costumed event also takes place on an evening/night but this year Santa Cruz was having the event on a Sunday during the day too. I have added some more photographs to the 'Santa Cruz' photo album of my journey and of the event itself. There is also a photograph of the bus stop in Golf del Sur which I use to catch the 09:35 115 to Santa Cruz. This one is handy because the hotel caffe opens at 09:00 affording a cup of coffee before the journey. All thanks to my friend Kev staying there. So I have worked out that all of my routes will work whe...

Masca - a hidden gem

Image
Bus Routes: 483[Playa Americas Est], 416[Icod] to Santiago del Teide, 355[Buenevista] to Masca Return: 355[Santiago del Teide], 416[Playa Americas Est], 843[El Medano] to Los Abrigos Masca is a hidden jem reached by a narrow winding road, originally a goat track up and over the mountain from Santiago del Teide down to the village. The sea is some 3 hours walk away on a well trodden path running down either side of the gorge. Once you reach the sea you have a choice of a pre-arranged boat trip back to either Los Gigentes or Los Cristianos or you can turn around and take about 5 hours to walk back to the village as you are now travelling up hill. You need to be pretty fit as the path is rough and the temperature quite high but, I am told, well worth the effort as the scenery, flora and fauna are spectacular.

Festival of the Cross

Image
Bus Routes: 470[Granadilla] to El Medano and Granadilla, 416[Playa Americas] to San Miguel Return: 416[Granadilla], 470[Los Cristianos] to San Isidro and Los Abrigos Feast of the Cross, El Medano, 2012 On the 3rd May each year many towns and villages in Tenerife decorate the cross outside the church, if they have one, with flowers otherwise crosses are made up and decorated and placed in front of the building. I noticed this when I went into El Medano the following day which prompted me to do a little travelling to see if I could find some more. I looked on the calendar to see if this related to a religious event then resorted to an internet search which gave me plenty on cross dressing! Eventually I found this item under 'Feast of the Cross in Wikipedia: In the  Gallican  usage, beginning about the seventh century, the Feast of the Cross was celebrated on May 3, and called "Crouchmas" (for "Cross Mass") or " Roodmas ". When the Gallican and...
